Mild Job Market Expected for Des Moines-West Des Moines IA

March 10, 2009 - Des Moines-West Des Moines area employers expect to hire at a moderate pace during the second quarter of 2009, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.
From April to June, 16% of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while 15% expect to reduce their payrolls, according to Manpower. Another 66% expect to maintain their current staff levels and 3% are not certain of their hiring plans.
"Employers anticipate staff levels to be lower than the first quarter of 2009 when 21% of companies interviewed intended to add employees, and 5% planned to reduce staff levels," said Manpower spokesperson Michael Lynch.
For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in Construction, Wholesale & Retail Trade, Information, Professional & Business Services, Education & Health Services and Leisure & Hospitality. Employers in Durable Goods Manufacturing, Nondurable Goods Manufacturing, Transportation & Utilities, Financial Activities, Other Services and Government plan to reduce staffing levels.
Of the 31,800 employers surveyed in the U.S., 15% expect to increase their staff levels during the April - June period, while 14% expect to reduce their payrolls, resulting in a Net Employment Outlook of 1%. Sixty-seven percent expect no change in hiring and 4% are undecided about their Quarter 2 2009 hiring plans.
The next Manpower Employment Outlook Survey will be released on June 9, 2009 to report hiring expectations for Quarter 3 2009.
